Welcome to the page made specifically for Embellishers in Ansteorra
working on Cuffs for gloves to be gifts from the Crown.

HRH Mahdi has a plan for Gulf Wars this year. He would like to present the attending Kingdoms with a single gift that is very symbolic when a King hands it to another King, a right hand glove with their Kingdom's arms on it.

I am in search of embroiders to make cuffs for one right hand glove for each of the Kingdoms that will be attending Gulf Wars this year. To that end I am sending this email to about 10 embroiders in hopes that a few of you can help us out.

I am asking if you would like to help in this project. If so I will send you a kit with the linen, the artwork, and if you wish the silk to embroider on to the linen. If you feel up to it I can send you the glove already cut out with instructions so that you can put it together. Otherwise I will be constructing the gloves.

All the gloves will be the same size, all the cuffs there fore will also be the same size.

So far on the project we have Dyan who will be doing decorative finishing on the cuffs after you are done.

Dyan's job is to ensure that they all have a common look to them, uniform.

I can have the kits ready by coronation. Or if you want the glove as well I can mail it to you.

Please let me know if you are at all interested in this project. Due date would be the end of February.

Q1. Do we back the stitching? Yes, please back your stitching. Please don't finish out your cuff (meaning do not cut, line, or seam it), only do the embroidered device. Dyan needs it open for embellishing and will line the cuff with white linen so they all match. If you are backing your embroidery with another piece of cloth - That is OK as long as it is at least the same size as the cloth provided!
Q2. The cuff is bigger than the area the leather has space for, why? The cuff will hang off the edge of the glove making it a true gauntlet. The linen is the size that we need. The pictures are not the size that we need, they are blown out of prportion so that we could see the squares more easily. I tried to make sure the scale was included on the edges of the images I sent. They are one inch increments.
Q3. Do I attach the cuff to the glove? No, Dyan will be doing that. Please mail her or hand her the completed project when you are done. We want them to all look as uniform as possible so she is in charge of doing the last step to ensure that. They need to be sent to Dyan by the end of February, or send them as soon as they are finished.

Q4. According to your website a glover's needle works best.  Where would I purchase them?  I have a leather needle but way, way to large for gloves.  Can a regular sewing needle be use? Glover's needles can be purchased at JoAnn's, they come in a packet with three sizes. A regular needle would work since this is a finer leather but it will still be difficult. Try to use the finer Glover's needles. If you cannot find them let me know and I will mail you a set. My order just came through.
Q5. Also according to your website, silk button twist is the best thread but regular button twist will work as well.  I guess I'm concerned that regular button twist is too thick for the lightweight leather. How many strands of thread?  You can use two strands off the twist, it will pull apart for you. If you use gutternam silk you may need to use two strands. For this weight of leather you will want to use the finer silk or linen thread just because if you use poly/cotton it will cut through the leather.
Q6. Are the devices to be appliqued onto the leather? No, they are sewn directly onto the 40x40 linen that was provided in the kit. Use backing. Then the cuff is to be lined when finished.
Q7. What type of embroidery should be used?  Satin?  Cross-stitch? Is DMC cotton embroidery thread acceptable to utilize? With silk? Do not use Cross-stitch, the linen is not fine enough for the period stitch. Use the stitch that you are most successful with. When we first put this idea together I was gently told not to provide the silk thread for the embroiderers for fear that we would insult them. Many like a specific type of silk thread and will use no other. I was totally unaware of this and did not want to provide the thread once I was told. But yes, please use silk thread.
Q8. When stitiching the glove together do you want the stiching (seams) on the outside or the inside of the glove? Inside seams. You can score lines along the seam placement to help with give it a crisp look. If you score it use a tapestry needle so that you minimize cutting into the leather. The needle with simple scratch the surface just a tiny bit.
Q9. Who is working on the gloves?
